Successful and Economical Deployment of Computational Fluid Dynamics in Building Applications

CFD(计算流体力学)应用于建筑领域的机遇与挑战——blueCAPE的应对及工程案例分享

 

Abstract:

Computational Fluid Dynamics is a relatively recent and very powerful analysis tool in all processes that deal with heat and mass transfer. Its historical development process is diverse and interesting, with several hurdles being removed along the way to its widespread use on a multitude of application areas. Several examples are shown to highlight its many uses.

This talk, however, focuses on the hurdles that we have identified as obstacles for CFD use in the Building Physics community, like cost, scalability and expertise requirements for example, and our own efforts to overcome them. Our objective is to allow a more productive use of CFD, especially when integrated in a work process that already encompasses several other tools.

A thorough description of blueCAPE’s own GUI (blueCFD®-AIR) for OpenFOAM® is thus presented. We start off by describing OpenFOAM’s main characteristics and explaining its relevance to Building Physics. The need for a GUI then becomes obvious, which sets the background for blueCFD-AIR. Several examples are presented to shown its philosophy and productivity potential.

Finally, multiphysics analysis are described as a way to fully realize the potential of CFD and several other simulation methodologies to improve indoor air quality, energy efficiency and urban comfort.

Speaker:

Nelson Marques (MechEng, PhD) is the CEO of blueCAPE Lda, a company wholly dedicated to CFD. He has been working in the field since 1995 and has participated in work performed for a number of European Union projects, international research institutes like NASA and several Fortune 500 multinationals.

He has led blueCAPE to be the major CFD provider in Portugal and a global innovator in the field of Open Source Software, delivering products and services worldwide with sustained, organic growth.

 Whenever possible, he enjoys tutoring students on works exploring advanced applications of CFD in both MSc and PhD thesis.
